When travel marketers ask Google's AI for advice, it often cites a video first
The question: Which sources does Google's AI cite when travel marketers ask how to market a hotel, a destination or a travel agency?
Across 25 Google AI Overviews for travel and social search marketing questions (US, 21 October 2026), 64 of 228 cited sources were videos or social posts (28%), and in 12 of the 25 answers the first source cited was a video. YouTube alone accounted for 45 citations.

Who made the videos
The hotel answers cite marketing tutorials, not hotels. The TikTok videos come from three social media marketers’ accounts, one of them cited in two hotel answers. The Instagram post is a creator explaining how they get free hotel stays. The most-cited YouTube video in this group, “Hotel Social Media Marketing Strategy: Boost Bookings and Build Your Brand”, appears in two hotel answers.
The answer to “how do tourism boards use tiktok” opens with a creator’s TikTok about how creators get paid by tourism boards. Three of its other sources are TikTok’s own advertising pages, two of them a tourism board case study.
For “travel agency marketing”, 6 of the 12 sources are YouTube videos, including the first. For “tiktok marketing for travel brands”, 7 of 13 sources are videos or social posts, and the first is a TikTok by a visual content company.
Judging by titles and handles, every cited video teaches or comments on marketing. None is a hotel’s, airline’s or tourism board’s own travel video. The 64 video citations point to 58 different videos; one YouTube tutorial on TikTok keyword research appears in three answers.
What it means
Google’s AI already treats video as a primary source for travel marketing questions. For about three in ten citations, and for the first citation in nearly half of the answers, it picks a video over an article.
The brands the advice is about are missing from it. Marketers and creators who teach marketing made the videos. The web sources, from 125 different sites, are mostly vendors writing for the same buyer: hotel technology companies, SEO software companies and TikTok’s own advertising pages.
So AI visibility for a travel brand is partly a video problem. Tracking which web pages an AI answer cites misses 28% of what these answers drew on, and 47% for travel agency questions.
What we haven’t measured yet
This note is about what marketers are told. The next question is what travellers are shown: the same count for traveller searches such as “best family resort in Langkawi”. We’ll publish that as a separate note, not as an update to this one.
Method and limits
- Questions: 27 English questions that travel and social search marketers ask, such as "hotel marketing strategy", "travel agency marketing" and "how do tourism boards use tiktok". Google showed an AI Overview for 25. "hotel marketing agency" and "airline social media marketing" had none. "how to get my hotel recommended by chatgpt" is counted with the AI visibility group.
- Observation window: one capture of each question on 21 October 2026, 08:59 to 11:13 UTC, from the US, collected with SocialSeal's Google AI search.
- Classification: video or social means a citation on youtube.com, tiktok.com, instagram.com or facebook.com. ads.tiktok.com, TikTok's advertiser site, counts as a web page (6 citations). "First source" is the citation Google listed first. Who made each video is judged from its title and account handle.
- Limits: these are questions marketers ask, not searches travellers make, so they show what marketers are told, not what travellers are shown. Google AI Overviews only, not ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude or AI Mode. One capture per question on one day, and AI Overviews vary between captures, so read the percentages as a snapshot. Groups rest on 13 to 60 citations each, which is why we give the counts next to the percentages. The YouTube data holds titles and links, not channel names.
